The Andes Mountains is a mountain system located in South America. It runs along the West Coast and stretches all the way from the Caribbean Coast to the southern tip of the continent. The Andes were created when the continental South American and oceanic Nazca tectonic plates collided. The tectonic plates are still active today, frequently causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The climate varies depending on the elevation and is separated into different categories. At around 3,000 feet, it is referred to as the “hot country”. At 3,000 to 6,000 feet, the temperature is moderate and is named the “temperate land”. Finally, at 6,000 to 12,000 feet, it is called the “frozen land”. The Andes can only handle some plants and animals in specific places because most areas are too dry or too cold. However, some humans with more advanced technology are able to survive in the harsh conditions. Before 600 CE, the population of Chile was mostly spread across the West Coast, but after that, some advanced tribes moved up into the mountains. The Andes is also one of the most important mining regions in the country. It holds gold, silver, copper, tin, platinum, and emeralds. Overall, the Andes Mountains is an important geographical part of Chile and it provides a unique challenge to the citizens living there.
