Chilean Rodeo

Overview

In the late 1550s, the first cowboys and horse riders went up to herd calves for the new season. This would eventually evolve into Chilean Rodeo, which stands to be the proud national sport of Chile. Though its history is nearly four-hundred years old, it was only declared as the national sport in 1962 by the Chilean Olympic Committee. The first ever rodeos were held in Plaza de Armas, Santiago and often lasted for days. Because of how long it took, horse riders would become heavily fatigued. To deal with the exhaustion and stress, rodeos were turned into a game with a full scoring system. The set up consists of a ring with a diameter of twenty to twenty-five meters. Within that ring is another smaller, padded ring with a twelve meter diameter. Two horse riders enter the ring after a young calf and attempt to pin it against the wall using their horse’s chest. The riders get three attempts to score as many points as possible. This unique, four-hundred year old tradition will forever serve as the proud national sport of Chile.
